National Bank of Canada As the sixth largest Canadian bank, the National Bank of Canada (Banque Nationale du Canada) is distinct in that it serves a majority of French-speaking clientele. Founded in Montreal in 1859, National Bank operates 446 branches which serve almost 2.5 million customers. It was founded by Francophone business men who were dissatisfied with other banks policies and although some initial capital was from Anglophone investors, Francophone’s retained exclusive control and held all positions of prominence. National Bank has been the recipient of many awards over the years and was ranked 136 on the prestigious 'Top 1000 World Banks 2009' by The Banker magazine.
