Co-operative Bank The Co-operative Bank plc is a commercial bank that is headquartered in Manchester and serves the United Kingdom. They were formed in 1872, but until 1971 did not become a registered company. People who choose to bank with the Co-operative Bank earn dividends on their business with the bank. The Bank launched Smile in 1999, a separate operation that is internet-only and it has received numerous awards and has the highest UK bank satisfaction ratings. The Co-operative Bank defines itself as an ethical bank, and has chosen to refuse to invest in companies involved in genetic engineering, global climate change, animal testing, the arms trade and sweat or child labour. The policy was first introduced in 1992. The bank does make a profit, which is their aim, but will refuse to take on new business which might compromise their policy on ethics. In the fiscal year of 2005-2006, they turned away nearly £10 million in business due to ethics, but still made a profit of £96.5 million. The have separate divisions for Commercial banking, Independent Financial Advice and Retail banking and have an annual revenue of £3.5 billion.
