Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce
Headquartered in Toronto, the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) is the fifth largest Canadian financial institution, serving over 11 million customers with 1048 branches and 3700 ATMs across the nation. CIBC was founded in Toronto in 1867 and also operates in Asia, the United Kingdom, the Caribbean and the United States. In 1969, CIBC introduced the Automated Cash Dispenser, becoming the first bank in Canada to use bank machines. Originally known as the Canadian Bank of Commence, it changed names in 1961 after merging with the Imperial Bank of Canada. CIBC attempted to merge with the Toronto-Dominion Bank in the late-1990s, but the merger was blocked by the Canadian government. CIBC is involved in programs locally and nationally, and for close to 20 years has sponsored the CIBC Run for the Cure, a marathon that raises research funds for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
