Bank of Montreal
The Bank of Montreal (BMO) was founded in 1817 in Montreal and is Canada’s oldest bank. BMO operates throughout Canada serving 7 million customers with over 900 branches and has significant holdings in Chicago where they operate as BMO Harris and Harris Bank. BMO attempted to merger with the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) in 1998, but the merger was blocked by the Canadian government. The two major banks did manage to merge their debit and credit processing services in December 2000, creating Moneris Solutions. BMO’s legal headquarters remain in Montreal, but the President, Chairman and most senior executives work out of the Toronto headquarters, reflecting the importance of the Toronto Stock Exchange on the Canadian economy. Involved in the community, BMO is a supporter of several sports teams and events: the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors, the Vancouver International Marathon Society and Skate Canada.
